Periodontal Treatment

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is caused by bacterial growth in the gums. If not treated properly, it can lead to tooth loss due to the damage of the tissue surrounding the tooth.

Gum disease is a general term for gingivitis and periodontitis. The milder of the two, gingivitis is characterised by swelling and bleeding in the gums. Generally, it precedes periodontitis; however, not all cases advance into periodontitis.

When it does, the inner layer of the gum pulls away from the tooth and form pockets where bacteria can accumulate. The toxins produced by the bacteria can destroy the bone and the connective tissue holding the teeth in place.

What are the causes of gum disease?

A variety of factors can contribute to its development. This includes poor dental hygiene, smoking, a family history of dental disease, pregnancy, among others. Due to these influences, some people are more vulnerable to it than others.

Eden Dental Centre offers periodontal treatments to restore gum health. Our treatments involve scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar from the patient’s teeth, both above and below the gum lines. During the procedure, if needed, the gums can be numbed with the application of either a surface numbing gel or local anaesthetic to improve comfort. For advanced stages, we can refer you to a gum specialist or a periodontist.

Gum disease treatment does not end in your dentist’s chair. Following the procedure, maintenance should be done at home. Proper oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing regularly, combined with regular dental visits, will reduce the change of gum disease. Our dentists can make all the necessary recommendations. If you need gum treatment, contact us and make an appointment today.
